Subject: Overcrowding in Physics Lecture Halls
Group #3 Memo
Issue: The topic our group decided to pursue is reducing the size of physics lecture halls.
Context: Due to the small number of sections available for physics, students are crammed into large lecture halls. This forces professors to teach a large number of students at once.
Audience: This memo is addressed to Sebastian Franco, the Department Chair of Physics Department
Reason: The physical limitations of lecture halls constrain the number of students that can be accommodated comfortably which results in the need for larger classes. Furthermore, many professors often lack the technological abilities to be able to coherently communicate with their students. Additionally, many professors use chalkboards which are able to cause difficulty for students in the back to see. The large class sizes impair students’ abilities to learn and create.
Solutions: In order to reduce the number of students in each class, we can have an increase in the number of sections for physics that will allow for the distribution of students. Furthermore, we can also hire more professors that will allow for this increase in sections.
Explanation: By increasing the number of sections and reducing class sizes, it will promote a more interactive learning environment. By improving communication, it encourages students to actively participate and ask questions. Additionally, in smaller lecture halls, professors build stronger relationships with all of their students, which can lead to a more personalized and effective learning experience. For example, in smaller classes professors can better understand and cater to each student’s learning preference.
